Barcelona will host for the first time the International Conference of the network of Health Promoting Hospitals on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of April where it is planned to assist nearly 900 health promotion experts from around the world.

This Congress, which has the support of the delegation of health of the city of Barcelona and is driven by the Catalan network of Hospitals and Services Health Promoters, wants to raise awareness of the main actions to be put into practice in hospitals and health in order to promote health among the population.

It will be attended by, among others, Professor Rima Rudd (Harvard School of Public Health, United States), one of the main theories of Health Literacy; Dr. Georg Bauer (University of Zurich, Switzerland), Salutogènesi theorist; Prof. Jürgen m. Pelikan (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Health Promotion, Austria), one of the greatest experts in health promotion; the Dra. Margareta Kristenson (Linköping University, Sweden), Coordinator of the Swedish network HPH, or Prof. Hanne Tonnesen (Bispebjerg & Frederiksberg Hospital, Denmark), CEO of the Secretariat of the International HPH network. Dr. Manel Santiñà, president of the Catalan network of Hospitals and Services Health Promoters and coordinator of Clinical quality and safety of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, is coordinating the Conference.

The Congress will provide the main news on topics such as health literacy (Health literacy); the improvement of communication between health professionals and patients, which entails the reduction of hospital admissions and, general, health benefits of the patient; or the culture of cooperation between sectors of health, education and new technologies to improve the health of society.

The promotion of health has as a aims to increase the health of the population, through the introduction of habits and healthy lifestyles. To achieve this, it works on the improvement of knowledge about best practices in personal health and collective; the improvement of communication between health professionals and patients and their families; the improvement and protection of the environment; the promotion of health in places of work and the orientation of the health centres towards the service of the promotion of health in the most vulnerable groups: children, teenagers, elderly or people at risk of social exclusion.

By the delegate of the Health Council, Cristina Iniesta, who had previously been coordinator of the Catalan network of Hospitals and Services Health Promoters, “health is a right and an active, integrative and shared value which does not depend solely on the health services. The promotion of health is the way to go and we have to do with the collaboration of everyone. We need to get this social complicity because healthy habits are present in the daily practice, especially when our citizens come to health services “. Iniesta also stated that “the importance of using a language understandable for everyone, a language that eludes the technicalities and make it affordable to all people. Citizens must have at its disposal information easy to understand, so that they can effectively incorporate healthy habits and Park risk behaviour “.

La Xarxa Catalana d’Hospitals i Serveis Promotors de la Salut està formada per prop de 40 centres sanitaris de Catalunya i té la seva secretaria tècnica a la Càtedra de Promoció de la Salut de la Universitat de Girona. Es va constituir com a associació científica sense ànim de lucre l’any 2008.
